Diani Beach
Kenya

Diani Beach

White sand and coral reef on Kenya's south coast, a short drive from Mombasa.

Diani sits on Kenya's south coast, a short drive from Mombasa, with a long stretch of white sand backed by coral rag cliffs and palm forest. A reef runs close to shore, keeping the water calm and shallow for much of its length, and the beach is usually paired with a safari as the coastal half of a longer Kenya trip.

Wildlife

  • A fringing coral reef close offshore, with snorkelling and diving over coral gardens
  • Colobus monkeys in the forest strips behind the beach, part of a local conservation project
  • Dolphins, seen on boat trips out past the reef
  • Whale sharks passing offshore in season, sighted on trips further south toward Kisite-Mpunguti

Best Time to Visit

December to March

Hot, dry, and calm, the most popular window for swimming and diving with the clearest water.

July to October

Cooler and drier, with good conditions for snorkelling and a common pairing with the Mara migration season.

April to June

The long rains. Quieter and cheaper, though the sea can be rougher and some dive operators pause trips.
