Kigali

Rwanda's capital, a clean and orderly city, and the usual starting point for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park.

Kigali is Rwanda's capital, built across a series of hills and known for being one of the cleanest and best-organised cities in Africa. For most visitors it's a stop of a day or two, a landing point before continuing on to gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, with the Kigali Genocide Memorial the one stop most itineraries build in before moving on.

Wildlife

  • Not a wildlife destination in itself, it serves as the gateway to Volcanoes National Park's mountain gorillas and golden monkeys
  • Nyandungu Wetland, a restored urban eco-park on the city's edge with birdlife and walking trails

Best Time to Visit

June to September

Rwanda's long dry season, the most common window for pairing a Kigali stopover with gorilla trekking.

December to February

A shorter dry season, also workable for a Volcanoes National Park itinerary starting from the city.

March to May and October to November

The rainy seasons. Kigali itself is unaffected as a stopover, though trekking days further out get wetter.
