7 Days Mt Kilimanjaro: Machame out Mweka / Tusker Route
Tanzania
1 / 5

Kilimanjaro's most scenic route — Shira Plateau, Barranco, and Lava Tower.
The Machame Route is arguably the most scenic and the most beautiful route by which to ascend the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro. The trek begins at Machame Gate on the southwestern side of the mountain and descends via Mweka on the southeast — offering the most varied scenery of any route on the mountain. Machame visits stunning locations including the Shira Plateau, Barranco Valley, and Lava Tower, and is known as the "Whiskey Route" because it is a more challenging climb than the Marangu — trekkers sleep in camping tents rather than huts. It is the second most popular route on the mountain. Nights are spent in mountain tents sleeping two persons per tent (3-man tents for luggage space). All supplies and camping equipment are carried by porters and meals are fully prepared. Machame is ideal for those who want a more challenging climb and are confident hiking over steep terrain for extended periods. Seven days is the recommended duration to maximise summit success.
