Five nights on Lamu Island over Christmas: ancient Swahili architecture, dhow sailing, and the Indian Ocean at its quietest.
Lamu is the oldest continuously inhabited Swahili town in East Africa. There are no cars on Lamu Island: donkeys and boats are the transport. The old quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At Christmas, the island is warm, the northeast monsoon has settled the ocean, and the dhows are sailing. This six-day Christmas package covers five nights on Lamu Island with a dhow sailing trip, a walking tour of the old town, and a visit to Shela Village and its beach.
Safari Highlights
- Lamu Old Town: UNESCO World Heritage Swahili architecture with no cars or rush
- Dhow sailing: a full-day sail on a traditional wooden dhow through the Lamu Archipelago
- Shela Village beach: a long, quiet beach a short walk from Lamu town
- Siyu Fort on Pate Island: an intact 19th-century Swahili fortification
- Christmas on an island with no roads: a genuinely different festive experience
